He was clearly responsible for her dying in one life already. And he only transferred his attention to her over from Gabrielle now because he realizes Ricardo is no longer going to inherit the power. Not because he likes her. That's why he had her go with him in a previous life and why she ended up dying in that life. Also Christian is highly unlikely to be the male lead. The male lead is actually quite an interesting person.
