My theory is he set this curse on himself due to his disbelief and desperation for MC to stay alive in their first timeline, so even if mc may be the trigger- it is ml himself who unknowingly put himself in his situation, this is the only explanation that i can think of that makes his existing affection for him genuine, otherwise the feelings he has developed would come from a dark and twisted place bcs of his devastating situation that's not genuine which I don't like.
