agreed. i wanted way more resolution between them. i was also surprised that the dad wasn't more regretful or even sad that he missed out on 8 years of his son's life. very weird to me, like he didn't even care. but the rest of the story...WONDERFUL. really grounded, sincere, loving couple.

I disagree. That's not a fair assessment at all. He didn't return with a grin on his face; Nishi-san never drew him with any kind of artless grin, ever, except in the high school flashbacks. Yoshitomi-san physically assaulted him for it. And Hirami-san wasn't in a position to get more involved.
Both Asahinas are not the vocal or confrontational sort. Just because they don't say it doesn't mean they don't feel it. Asahina-kun, up to now, has not properly "Welcome Back" to his Dad and for him that means something. Observe the interactions between Asahina-kun and Yoshitomi-san and Hirami vs his Dad--the distance is obvious. In the porch scene he acknowledged that he had a grudge against his Dad--and it didn't start to go away until he apologised.
I don't think he wants grovelling--in the end what does that prove or make up for? (It doesn't fit in with Asahina-san's character anyway so it would come off as fake and performative.) He wants his Dad to acknowledge and love him. To recognise wrong done (the apology) notice him. And they're making the first steps towards that.
