From what I understood he's from the future
They are both named Ian. Two different bodies, 1 soul. The mc Ian was able to go back to the past due to the magic circle. The Ian of this timeline was suppose to die, but the mc Ian was able to avoid it. However, like what the mc Ian always wonders, we do not know what happened to his body from the future.

They are gaining popularity and power from the mass that's why they want the power pf the north so they can used it to show their power and strength against the royal. I guess royal family can't do anysht because church is close to the commoners and nobilities, due to it's "charity, healing and now saint".
