If I were in his shoes I would have said yes I’m seeing someone/I’m dating someone/I have a lover etc. when you’re in a relationship and you don’t want others to know who you’re dating you don’t really have to address their gender and be so specific about their question! You simply let them know you’re taken and it’s done.
