if the rapist character is one of the main characters, how can you look past it if its something that bothers you?

because not every part nor chapter of a story is about them, in a story there's literally alot to love separating each character and events. it's okay to love one character then hate another. in fact, the way you say that how can you love something in a story when half of it is just rape or inappropriate topics.. you literally just answered your question, saying half of the story means you still have the half or bits of the story to have the reasons to still love or like it..

if this was a different type of story i would agree, but this a romance were the primarily focus is on the two individuals and the world building and every other character is underdeveloped so there is really not much to latch onto outside of the couple bubble.

i dont see how i answered my own question, because i literally still dont understand how someone can like a story were they dont like a character that accounts for half of it, how is that not significant enough for it to not be distracting and make the whole experince distasteful?
if it was some side character or a main character that you know will face accountability for their actions, than i would understand, but thats really not the case with these types of stories.
