actually no, plus when J started being a hunter after the day of the rift it wasnt about money or fame for everyone, it was just a race to try and close rifts, clear monsters and save people as fast as possible with whatever espers appeared in the 1st generation.
he was a bit bothered by the fact after a while theyd just call him to close rifts after people were rescued already, even in situations where realistically the hunters present couldve handled the situation. But that didnt make him hate it, because even if it was less personal, he was still saving people.
the real reason why J decided to lay low after returning is a bit bittersweet and its revealed way later. Basically during his time as a hunter J hoped for peace and safety the most, and seeing the world more at peace and closer to normal 8 years later without him made him feel like a relic of the past that wasnt welcome here. it made him fear his return would somehow shake this stability people gained in his absence
