I know I’m late but from what I understood the message is that true happiness does not exist unless you take it from others. The same goes for kindness, it doesn’t exist, it’s just selfishness in disguise. Since both of them shared trauma that involved their happiness being taken away, their true selves, kept in their darkest places (hence the metaphor of dark mirrors), bloomed to do the same thing with those that made their lives miserable… Basically the thing is that everyone is mean deep down, there’s no such thing as “good people”; you either are the good guy who everyone takes advantage of, or the bad guy, who is “mean” in order to survive others unkind actions… and the truth is no one wants to be step on, meaning that only evil exists, it’s just a matter of time to trigger it.
