I get all your point. But some of u r forgetting. Whether he is a protagonist or not every one has a thing or two they r not good at.
First of all. John didnt have any power. Or so he thought. But he had it and didnt knw but he was bullied for it. He obviously would be enraged. Not everyone can be a shine and princy. That is lil old johns character. He was like that bcoz of his environment. He became twisted.
Thn came the authorities.. Who dont knw what but absolutely didnt handle it nicely despite being responsible adults. In my opinion there "counselling" wasnt good either.
In fear of authorities( i think so) and he thought he was wrong of doing all that in his past he decided to become cripple. But the whole of school became against him. He went to stay in the dorm but the "mid-tiers" didnt leave him alone. He was just walking but the schoole hierarchy didnt leave him alone. He wanted to stay low. To redeem himself. But bullies didnt let him. Why bcoz they think they can do do whatever they wanted to do they can do it. And what was so called arlo the rest were doing? They just didnt do there responsibility. Now that bcoz of them john has bcome twisted they think that thwy were right all along.
But look at the picture here. Sure john is not right either.. Definitely wrong.. But he didnt have good ppl arround him either.. The whole school leads a damn hierarchy system. They are just what 15/16/17 yr old.? And theres a system. Adults didnt do anything. The so called uppers turned a blined eye. Now they are all justice this justice that. Right or wrong. Now john turned to a villain and they are all in sink like lets solve this and turn our school a peaceful place. Why didnt they do that from the start? Why did the other stdnts turned a blind eye when other low tiers were being bullied? Now they say "tyrant" "monster". Didnt high tiers do the same too?
Sigh. Than arlos betrayal did a 180 turn. So how a kid who had past trauma stay good? Who only had his tyrannical way to protect himself. When u stay with a tyrannical parents even u can become twisted(not may for everyone. But not everyone is strong)... He needs time.. And something major to happen for his character development. I say. In my opinion. His way may be tyrant but he is more human than others. At least he tried to redeem. But even after they tried to bully and get beat up they didnt turn.
John has to take time. And other high tiers need to take there responsibility seriously. They had already fucked up enough. And i think john turning point is not far.

John is unredeemable not because he's bad, but because he refuses to see he's doing bad. justifying his reactions as the consequence of the context where he grew is BS because enviroment isn't everything in ourselves.
He has all the right to lash out on people for what happened to him, but the author can't expect to make it a good MC when he denies his friends because they don't do as he expects.
John is a bad character because it pretends to have a character development through his circunstances while making no sense in the process.
It's unrealistic and hence unrelatable when you show a character persona one way and then flip it completely without a thought process and say something like "The bullying made him that way" and expect everything to magically make sense is wrong. Cuz it doesn't. And I got a lot more to say about how the bullys are depicted here, they're totally void.
How was john able to manage in wellstone before he knew Sera?
John didn't fear the authorities, he fears that one inspector, because his way of dealing with indiscriminate violence cases like john is to show that same violence in their head for them to see their own doing over and over again for them to think of what they've done. John refuses to acknowledge such thing exist because his brain wasn't written in his creation.
All he sees and think is violence on him and violence on others. He doesn't think for himself about things. And when he entered wellstone and decided to shut down the violence he forgot to turn on his brain because he only tried to follow what the book his father gave him said without thinking what it actually meant.
What john needs is time and ppl. AND something to change and break it to his head what he is doing. He is too enraged to see or hear anything sera says. He cant trust others anyways. None of them did any good to him either. Since he is having trust issues and ptsd.(most likely)
But i think environment matters. Coz u cant actually cant be comfortable somewhere where everything is against u... I dont but i cant . And u have some issues to boot. Maybe author trying tell us something with johns character or he just made him just for the plots sake. I dont knw. But i am not gonna give up on him now after chearing him on first... Lets see how he turns out.

What john needs is to pull his head out of his a*s. He's not the only one that was harassed. His reaction is the same as those drug addicts that blame everything on the things that happened to them and use their boost in power to lash out on everything without thinking.
You can describe a context where everybody is against you, but that wasn't it. Was everyone against john? no they weren't. More like he took what a bunch of kids did to him and went to blame and lash onto everybody else regarless if they were or weren't involved or even if they were his own friends. After that, everyone was against John, and with all the reason and rights to be like that towards him.
Hurt and broken a person can become, if he hurts the people that helps him and instead of stop to think, "hey, is this right? I just punched my girlfriend in a fit of rage", he starts to think "That b*tch had it coming for not taking my side even if I'm wrong".
Hope john comes back on track real soon.
