I just read the novel so
he really didn’t want to have a child because of his wife’s health. They even used contraceptive pills but it might be because of his wife’s wish that she became pregnant. He begged and clung to her like crazy for her to not continue with the pregnancy but she said she’ll be okay and will never leave him. She asked him to promise to love that child and he broke that promise.
He’s basically a dead in side but there’s no excuses for his actions and he himself also knows better than anyone else that he doesn’t deserve the child’s forgiveness.
I would like to know what happens to them? Does he have a redemption arc?

I works after except people who are receptive is willing and able to eventually open up. This guy is actively resisting while insisting he can do it. So his reaction is obv of someone not willing. I'm not saying willing means it will go in easily but someone who tightens up and fighting like crazy is being counterproductive. So yes, it would hurt more. And take longer etc. and would just be tight the whole time ... So I would agree regarding the first time but not from someone unwilling.
