I don't know much about other mmorpgs, but I think Final Fantasy 14 is considered one of the best ones to play. The story is first repetitive before getting really strong and deep (says my sister who used to play), you can play for free up to level 70 (with no DMs/whispering), they update it every few years with new expansions, you can change your class by just changing your gear, and the community is kind and inclusive.
Then if you decide to pay, you just have to buy the latest expansion (all other expansions come with it) and pay $13 a month. But again, you'll get months of play for free before you have to decide if you wanna play. Worth looking into, at least.
