No this sort of thing does happen. Especially if someone has some kind of trauma latched onto themselves already. Social standing in places is a major issue. Prejudice is an extreme problem in countries like Japan. It can be seen as dishonorable or dirty to be with someone socially seen as lesser even if they're not. That's just how it is.
