To think that sharing unofficial and illegal scanlations contributes significantly to a work’s popularity. BL’s popularity on an international scale is founded upon such practices, and it is what made people realize that there is a market for such works to begin with. Paid subscription services and official publications probably wouldn’t have happened in the scale that it is happening now if it weren’t for piracy, like be for real. This could be seen in a lot of danmei works. Do you think any of them would be officially published to such a wide audience if people didn’t enjoy and share unofficial translations for it? If fandoms weren’t made over unofficially shared work?

One thing that irks me is that these authors genuinely think they are losing money. I'm like...boo...people who read illegally do so for a reason. You were NEVER going to see a dime from people who literally cannot afford it.

HOWEVER, there are people, who though they cannot afford the story on legal sites at some point, might save for it out of love. Which would have never happened if the story was not consumed before hand.
I read Sign and Dangerous Convenience Store during a rough patch in my life on this site. I could not spare the money to read it legally (after the translations came out) but I loved the stories so much, guess who supported the author when she could.i even bought the physical copies when they came out.
Would I have spent my money if I did not know the story was so peak? Probably not. This is what I believe most danmei and manga authors understand. People getting a taste of your story and moving them, is how you create and cultivate an audience. Crashing out on Twitter will just earn you bitterness and scorn.
