They just weren’t happy together, as usual arranged marriages between nobles turn out. She grew up with loving parents. With him there was never any love between them. He was pretentious pretending to be a more knowledgeable businessman than he was, he wanted to save money even when it came to his daughter’s dress decorations, and he was unable to defend her from his mother and instead made her endure till the end.
With him she didn’t have the freedom or will to be happy anymore. She had to give up her only hobby which was painting, and she couldn’t wear high heels anymore because of him. It’s about not having the option anymore more than anything.
She didn’t feel any joy in life anymore after a certain point aside from her daughter. And you can see why that would break her daughter’s heart. She doesn’t want her mom to settle for him again. She wants her mom to live her own life and actually be happy. It’s never been about him being a bad person. Is the only reason someone can be unhappy in their marriage be because the other party was a terrible person? I like the way this story did it a bit more. It’s refreshing.
