I think it was more along the lines of yes he saved her, but then he took away her freedom just as she had it taken away before when she was a slave. She knew he wasn’t a bad man, she was even starting to fall for him, but she still didn’t have her freedom. When he saved her again of course she was happy and she did like him but I think it would have been the same ‘I won’t marry you’ until he let her go free, which he did, and she could make her own choices, the choice she made was to stay with him of her own free will, not feel like a trapped slave.
For the other part, I’m not sure, but like with most royal families, there is always bound to be a deeper more sinister plot.
