I read the adult Elle is the one that sent them both back in time with their memories intact. If that’s the case, maybe Elle, who’s supposed to have lost his mind, was monitoring his father’s thoughts after he sealed him in the palace with the images of his mom. Maybe that’s how he found out the whole truth, other spoilers I’ve read....which say that not only did Reina’s psycho dad threaten ML’s life if he didn’t ignore her (he had spies in the palace) ml’s stepmother and half brother also were in on it. When fl was pregnant and gave birth, ml wanted to come home from the war to be with her and Elle, but the emperor and crappy father worked to keep him from her, threatening Reina and Elle’s life if he didn’t do as he was told. So maybe adult Elle was able to find out the truth and thought his parents deserved a second chance. Anyway, just throwing thoughts out there.
