I actually think that Jake having the dreams of a daughter he will never see again is a paunishment for him to realize the horrible things he had done to Sean. Sean had a horrible past because of Jake, he even went his way to ram over them just because of jealousy, it would've been better if he just took him away from Kyle but he didn't. So making him dream something he wouldn't have in real life is an eye opener for him to treasure what he truly loves.
