As translator said, one of the work arounds for a same sex couple in Japan is adoption. From what I remember, either the partner adopts the other as their child, or the family adopts the other as their son/daughter. So, legally they're 'family.' Maybe partly why incest in Japanese romance stories are kinda plentiful? Maybe I'm over reaching.
