The story is as realistic as can be so if he kills someone as powerful as the ML, he’s definitely going to get jailed or killed for it. That’s why he knows it’s a one-way ticket. Also the fact is that those two are definitely already developing feelings for each other. So if he’s in love with him and kills him, he’ll be even more inclined to kill himself afterwards. And if he manages to survive, he’ll probably spend the rest of his life miserable and alone in a mountain somewhere. This story is very likely to have a tragic ending. The only thing that could change that would be the MC figuring out who gave the kill order and what motivated it.
