Maybe she wants her to realize chastity and purity is a made up patriarchal concept and to drop the “honor my father through marriage” bs. Satako literally thinks her only value lies in getting married and becoming a man’s property. How is NOBODY seeing this author is trying to cook here.

hmm thats a compelling perspective. i didnt notice how the author underscores how traditional values can perpetuate outdated gender roles. if the author is critiquing these norms through Satoko as u say, it adds a critical layer to my understanding of her... but her sense of urgency to 'be of use' through marriage might also reflect a struggle against time and her own within a limited timeframe (i.e her condition) could be reflecting the pressure society placed on women to fulfill certain roles during that era

No I think both are true. She feels that pressure and urgency because that’s all she thinks her value is as a woman, ESPECIALLY, a sick one that doesn’t have long to live. I think this authors other works have underlying feminist tones coupled with female wish fulfillment. I do genuinely think the author is going to keep satako on the island until she finds herself. It’s like when kids leave the home and grow up and have to unlearn all the toxic stuff passed down to them once they have the freedom to do so. But we’ll see!
