His personality really is unappealing.
He's the type of stand off-ish character in stories that for a change is a loner for a good reason. I wouldn't be able to hang out with people who are constantly prissy and suspicious about anything nice or kind you do. Acting as if being nice to others or helping them if needed is a bad thing.
