He's not 17, he turned 18 when they got into the relationship. Because in the chapter where the friend asks about their age gap he told him 15, the friend then says "she's 33?!" Which means he's already 18 because 18 + 15 is 33. I think the only reason why he kept saying he wanted to be an adult soon is because 20 was the legal age in Japan before, hence making those under 20 underage. Hope this helps
