imo they should've went ahead with nariyuki treating mc as a replacement and then extend the volume to at least 3 volumes so that way it ends up nariyuki falling in love with him as an adult, not when he was still a child.
and just so we're clear here mc isn't a minor in the present, he's in college which is usually 18-19y.o. it's probably a case of mistranslation because what he meant to say there was he was not of legal age to drink in Japan which is 21y.o.
