Rachel- though should ofcourse apologise- deserves some grace. I remember Rachel trying to stop Duke, while eating, taking walk- any moment and the Duke would deflect any request regarding ML. Don't you remember the scene, Rachel said, if Duke doesn't stop abusing ML, she won't call him Dad anymore? Rachel honestly tried a bit. The only one who cared for him. And Rachel was still child. She knew the Duke would easily lie to her. What would she do? Confront Duke? That would seem suspicious and he might end up abusing the ML more.
i get it which is why for like, when reading even up to chapter 38-40 i mostly didnt blame rachel, but when we get to the duke's "apology" she thinks things like "dude hes seriously still on that??" as if she didnt explain to the audience that she knows about the entirety of the abuse and how horrible it is. Shes shocked that the few and far between attempts of stopping the abuse didnt bring it to an early halt, as if she didnt know that in the og novel the duke never changes his heart about his son and continues to treat and beat him like a monster. It shows that this whole time, she never actually cared about how the ML was faring, and rather, she just wanted to know if he was with the blonde yet. She didnt consider even once that maybe the reason the ML in the og novel is so twisted is the horrible abuse he suffered, and that what he needed as a kid wasnt crazy romance with some dude. Like she "knew" but she didnt -acknowledge- this fact, she treated it as though it were unavoidable. And the worst she could do to stop a torrent of abuse was say "i wont call you dad anymore"?? for the end of some extreme twisted views and extreme actions, as someone who is mentally an adult, she should be okay with taking some extreme measures. Like, for the first 30 chapters i was really excusing it in my mind, but when she continuously turned a blind eye and acted ignorant, it really is unexcusable
I feel like you're forgetting that the Duke liked Rachels father- NOT Rachel. And the separation period- 7 years- was decided to keep her away from Lucian as well. He thought Lucian was manipulating Rachel. The Duke even restricted the letters between them. Again she was completely under the mercy of someone- who would abuse Lucian for ANYTHING. So, suppose Rachel DID act more pro- Lucian--- do you think Lucian would survive? The Duke almost made Rachel the Duchess in the previous life, which is why ogRachel was a bitch to Lucian. I'd say young Rachel did moderately great and by the time they were adult- Lucian already learnt to stand for himself and didn't require protection.
but see, as an audience member, we read that during this entire time rachel: doesnt give a shit whether lucian is being beaten or not, even though she is mentally an adult and KNOWS about these things. We never see a moment where she genuinely reflects on this and considers the best options to help him. The only thing she reflected on was the "romance" of the original novel. Her thoughts almost never reflect concern for the person being abused in front of her. thats what I mostly find unforgiveable. Thats whats deplorable. The whole time she really doesnt care, and plays ignorant to the whole ordeal. It makes me detest the duke, duchess, fl, and even the author of the manhua. All of them act as though it cant be helped, and that when the ML has issues its bc hes just "like that"
