I think the biggest problem with the king is that he kind of is. Though the queen is directly and intentionally harming the prince (a LOT), the king is just indirectly harming him. The whole point is that the king is aware that the queen is a massive killer and obsessed with etienne, but he's just blind sighted and doesn't wanna look into what that means for etienne. Everyone else the queen becomes obsessed with is usually cuz she wants them dead.
As a human being, you should care if another human being is being abused. Also, the child is never at fault for the actions of the parent, yet that's all the king can think of etienne. This isn't a measurement of love, it's a measurement of basic human decency.
The king, who is basically aware but doesn't wanna actually look at the facts, is directly allowing it to happen. That's rishars entire point for being mad at the king. This entire time, the king is the only person who could genuinely do something against the empress, but instead he's just tucking his tail and blaming the fact that she commits these actiobs rsther than considering how he's just letting it happen.

My point has nothing to do with his trauma. His trauma is valid, but just cuz you have trauma with one person doesn't mean u get to be an asshole to someone else.
If the king is mentally unstable, he should not be king. Same way the queen is mentally unstable and should not be queen. Once you recognize you've lost your marbles you shouldn't force yourself to do something you can't for selfish reasons. Being at the very top of a governmental body is the worst thing to do if you're mentally unstable.
I agree that the king definately could have done more and has caused much harm with his neglegence. I would argue that he didn't have much choice in being king, rather that his wife killed everyone else till he was the only option. In my opinion the real issue is that he doesn't treat his son like a human, but rather as a tool that the queen is using against him. even if he couldn't stand to take care of MC personally, he should still have found a way to ensure his kid is happy and healthy
As a King he cares more about the kingdom than his own son's wellbeing. Well isn't his son part of the Kingdom too? He takes care of his subjects, but his own son he ignores and neglect, using his trauma as excuse of his actions. Knowing all to well what kind of person the Queen is, he let his son suffer at the hands of such person. Trauma or not, he could have taken away the child, so the child could at least grow up to be happy. Even though he doesn't receive his father's love. The child is innocent, both parents are hurting him and destroying him for 20+ years.
