He's allergic to the sun. I have a sun allergy and it's actually a pain. It veries in how severe it is, but it seems he has a fairly high intolerance for the sun, but not too extreme. There are some who if the sun touches skin it will cause 3rd degree burns and can cause skin cancer. I have a mild sun intolerance and even for me, if I spend more then 10 minutes outside without sunscreen I get sunburn and hives. It's one of the worst things to have an allergy to because there's no where in the world without sunlight

The other thing mentioned is that he doesn't know how to swim well, he can swim just not well at all as he wasn't taught. the half chapter shows him getting lessons later on. so Odds are he was never taught
Yeah, he cant swim thats why he couldnt leave the small island when the kids untied the rope. I believe he never learned to swim because of what his father did to him. In the end though, it was his father who was mortified of what he did that saved him from drowning.
