This is clearly irrelevant for the comment but, in a royal setting, becoming the mother of the emperor is the greatest position a woman could aspire. In this aspect, that's the highest position for a cosort/empress. Not all empresses become empress mother, because it might be a concubine or consort child who takes the throne later (depending on the story). And with the position comes the riches, authority and prestige. In this case I think she's just hungry for power.
