If he does have a redemption arc, it would have to be during banishment. Redemption sometimes focus on repairing the original relationship, but I would like to he him banished, trying to figure out how to survive with nothing out in the real world. Being treated like shit in another kingdom, doesn't necessarily need to be slavery, but I would prefer demeaning manual labor. Like always mucking the stables.
I would want him to fall in love again, with a guy stronger than him that won't deal with his bullshit. And when he constantly loses he would have to face the fact that he just has to be a better person. He doesn't get the guy in the end, but he will continue to work to be a better person because he realizes it makes himself happier.
