Having ED is similar to balding. You can’t control it but there are remedies you can try via prescription.
loads of people get ED in their 40s or earlier. It's not weird and it's not like he can't get it up at all but probably has less stamina than his younger partner and longer recovery times if they go for several rounds. Totally not unusual when you're a 40-year-old dude
