No? I think he just found him as a kid bc he was suppose collect his soul as Shinigamis do but he couldn’t do it and from then on he had back luck and Caleb would continue to protect him instead of collect his soul

Don't worry. I had the same confusion, but then I remembered that Caleb said that he has been a Shinigami for over 100 years and I felt better.
