If my interpretation is correct, Black Death is like a loan shark in one way or another. They let those who are struggling borrow money. If the borrower fails to pay it back, a cross is drawn on their house or somewhere. It’s like an indication that the person living there is their target or that they will soon die. The reason why Boy lost his family is also because of that, which is why he has trauma related to the dark.
