I understand overprotectiveness by a relative but not by a friend or not to this extent and tbh I don't think its overprotectiveness , what yuki is feeling atm . And that is where our opinions differ. You have relatives who are like that , but have completely different circumstances though- i had friends (who in the end weren't thinking of me but themselves) that were acting like that and again that is the difference. Anyway , of course we have different opinions and you're entitled to yours as I am entitled to mine.

Takao is being over dependent on Yuki ever since they were children with the whole "Yuki is my everything" and because of that Yuki is overprotective of him, they only have each other (I don't think they have any other friends) hence the line "we'll just be stuck in that dark place forever", it's good that Takao wants to break out of that loop but at the same time he's being selfish, he's only thinking of how to get out of their loop and cause of that he's hurting Yuki, I feel like he's only thinking about himself and not even considering Yuki's feeling, Takao should should talk to him properly about how he really feels and that they shouldn't be dependent on each other. But he didn't do that and it feels like he abandoned Yuki when another guy came along, you should really see it from Yuki's point of view.
