this is just how I took it but I think it was Adain's sense of guilt haunting him after learning the priest was abusing the children, so it manifested in his nightmares as Jonak being a child himself and the gault he felt not being able to do anything about what had happened in the past. that's just my take tho other people might see it differently

He saw that action of him similar to the priest's action wherein he used hunger as an upper hand against children to exploit them. The priest knew the children can't say no the same as Adain knew Jonak can't refuse him
