Even now with tattoos becoming more trendy, people with tattoos can't enter public baths in Japan. I think it's becoming destigmatized amongst young ppl but older generations still make the association tattoo = gang

It’s generally accepted now and many people (mostly idols, actors, etc) have them and aren’t prohibited to enter public baths, etc, as it was the case before. Of course there are still some people that can’t accept it, mostly elders.
However, since the military does not accept men with large tattoos (idk the exact reason), men who get very large tattoos prior to performing their military duty (all men are required to serve about two years of military service) may be accused of “draft dodging”, a criminal offense.
Aaalsoo (and this is the last thing lmao) the tattooist is required to be licensed medical doctors for the tattoo be “legal”.
