In the story they used being drunk as an analogy, when you're super drunk you won't be fully conscious as your brain is being inhibited by the alcohol but you're still able to move around, talk and etc.
The brain is complex and in psychology there is the conscious and unconscious self. The app takes that higher level of consciousness, (the conscious mind contains all of the thoughts, memories, feelings, and wishes of which we are aware at any given moment), and leaves behind your unconscious self (a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that are outside of our conscious awareness). Basically the body is left as a refined drunk version of a person as described in the story, which is why they mentioned that the friend is more polite when drunk or something.
