i guess cause he's already been suspicious for a bit but tried to ignore it. and the guy was very average type of nice. keep in mind, mc has no frame of reference for friendships cause he's been bullied so much. He's learning a lot of things and they're teenagers so he doubted for like a day but then was like "nah i was too mean i still like him" but whoops unfortunately he encountered a psycho and needs rescuing XD
