The boy grew up with a massive grudge and Rykell had a hard time coaxing him to let go and focus on mastering his ability. Phon hates the world and despises his talent, so Rykell taught him high-level magic and let Duchess Kyle taught the kid swordsmanship to compensate the gap (it's implied that Rykell felt a little disappointed at his student, but he understood the reasoning).
Phon later shifted his life goal from revenge to protecting Maybelle, because he chooses her as his master. Phon will master his true ability later (after Maybelle modified the "rein" and purify most of the corruption from the beast's mana, liberating Phon from the painful chain).
