
So, even if you get permission to put whatever you want on someone's back, is it appropriate to do a near-full back tattoo? I, for one, don't think so. Plus, wings have the double whammy negatives of being completely unoriginal and full of religious allegorical significance that could offend the recipient. I don't think it was a good choice (for the mangaka or the character).
When the tattooist said it would take 4 sessions I assumed he was doing something small and dragging it out, but that's not the case if it's such a large tattoo. Also, although attitudes have obviously changed in the last 100 years, tattoos are still stigmatized by mainstream Japanese society. The MC will never be able to go to most beaches and public baths again. If he worked in a different industry, he could also be let go. Again, this speaks to how inappropriate ginormous angel wings are to give as a first time tattoo. I question everyone's judgment here- the MC, the ML, the mangaka, and their editors.
