iirc, the uke & seme are both older than the rest of the kids in their class bc of backstory shit. Uke approaches seme in the beginning to make friends with him and at that point, uke assumes he's older than the seme. The seme plays along with it till they get a contract that states "the hoobae will listen to the hyung" or whatever, and then springs the fact that he is in fact older than the uke. Since the uke is a sweetie goody-two-shoes, he starts calling the seme hyung since the reveal

To me it was clear they did not die and there was even official art released before the side storys where you could see them come out of the water en taking a bath with the kitty's
