They are trying to understand each other, but (especially) Lyle's communication skills have never been good, so maybe Ash is walking on eggshells, trying to understand Lyle and help him find himself in this relationship. And you can see that Ash knows that Lyle has his reasons to move, but doesn't want to tell Ash, and he does not want to force it either.
