So life insurance is when you die, health insurance is if you're sick and/or disabled
People get life insurance so that, in the event that they die, their next of kin (partner or kids, usually) get a payout. When you sign up for life insurance you can decide which amount you want your family to get eg. $500,000. You pay a monthly amount to have that insurance. People do this so that their family isn't suddenly left in a bad financial situation - like, if your partner isn't working because you have very young kids, or you still have a large mortgage to pay off on your house and only your partner's income wouldn't be enough to make the payments so they'd lose the house... that kind of thing.
That's why life insurance companies require health checks etc. -- if you have cancer or heart disease or something (or you're an alcoholic) you're too risky to insure because you probably won't pay enough in monthly premiums to cover the payout amount when you die. Sounds harsh, but insurance companies exist to make a profit.
