I don't think this confusion is a translator issue, I think it's because of the author's writing "style".

This was surprisingly a really good story, imo. I stumbled upon it and was very pleased I read it. The bad guy could have been a little less extreme and the 5 year old a little less mature, imo, but other than that I really enjoyed this manga for a quick midnight read.
