You just aren't still constantly surprised by your grief after a year. You're nervous system simply will not allow it to remain as acute as it was in the first few weeks. It's not physically possible, so what's happening is performative grief where he is faking and forcing himself to feel as if it was still the first week she passed.

I think crows are amazing. They are the coolest animals. They're one of the only animals capable of reason.
We think of dogs as intelligent but even the most intelligent dog figures out problems through trial and error. They just do until they find something that works and remember that solution. Dogs will learn by watching other dogs but they don't usually go out of their way to teach each other. When crows are presented with problems they will actively think of a solution, look for tools, and then try things and once they find a solution they will actively teach it to other crows, which is more like how we solve problems.
I wrote all this out to explain why I feel like they should have made the crow guy more intelligent.
