OMG OMG OMG
Tbh helena's backstory explains a lot of her actions that i saw as insincere or just weird. The way she stands up for/tries to include eris into the childhood "friends" group, the way she's so smiley all the damn time, the way she apologized for that disgusting scumbag's actions.
She lived a repressed life ever since she was child, to placate her mum's feelings of despondency and helplessness. She probably endured more abuse than she mentioned in this chapter, and the fact that she didn't even think to tell her mum to screw off for tryna SCAR her face when was a child and whatever else punishments she doles out means that she's got self-esteem issues, she probably thinks she doesn't amount to anything at all if she doesn't act right.
On top of that, she has to keep pandering to that shitbag prince and his mum while swallowing down her discomfort and pretend like she was enjoying it all.
The poor thing probably wanted to be friends with eris coz she was very similar to herself, only to be hated by her and watch as people "protected her" from eris.
I won't be surprised if eris and helena both end up becoming sorceresses and just ditching this whole stinkfest
