Yes, something bad happened to Carcel although he survives it because he’s a competent fighter, An assassin will attack him in his bedroom in Calztela while he’s asleep. Fortunately he only ends up getting a bullet graze from the attempt.
The assassination attempt will trigger Carcel’s memories of the past two lives and he will see the two men whom Ines was involved with. He receives a letter from Ines telling him she misses him so he goes to visit her in Mendoza.
In Mendoza, Carcel asks Ines repeatedly if she likes him because now he remembers she was with other men in the past two lives and he always suffered unrequited love for her.
Despite all of the above, Ines and Carcel only grow closer and closer. Ines also finds out a shocking truth about she and Carcel while in Mendoza. As to love confession, that comes closer to the end of the story but the reader knows Ines loves Carcel long before that.
