I'm glad some people are seeing thru the BS of the ml's shitty behavior despite his so-called sad past. Which doesn't excuse his current abusive behavior to Dan.
I'm sick of authors using the "tragic past" card to try and redeem a shitty character and make us feel sorry for them.
We need present moment redemption GROVELING arc not a cliche redemption that uses some past childhood trauma

Backstories work for understanding why he is the way he is, not to excuse his actions. Character's arcs, their pasts, allow us to understand their mannerisms and behaviors in the current timeline. I don't understand why people don't know how storytelling works? It's not 'cheap writing,' that's how character arcs work.
Why would we want a character that is only an asshole for the sake of being an asshole without any explanation? That would be more boring and pointless, tbh.
We are obviously getting through his backstory so he can get his redemption in the present...

Yes damn right! Like some people are still calling Jaekyoon asshole like they wanna force themselves hating on him. Dan had his grandma but Jaekyoon hadn’t anyone that he could understand feelings or can express them like others! Like if people hate him why they force themselves to read it? So annoying ngl

I really don't like how we got to have an entire chapter wasted on that insufferable red-haired twat. Why does she get to have a space in this side story? She's insignificant, her appearance feels forced and adds nothing, especially considering her lack of character development!
I would have preferred to see what happened with Wookyung and the emotional turmoil and the suffering that he went thru during Minho's hospitalization, that would have been way more interesting, not to mention satisfying...
Also why is it that only Minho gets to have a flashback where he feels guilty and remorseful about his past behavior? Why don't we see Wookyung or Duna feeling all guilty and shitty about their way worse past behaviors, instead?!
This author is trying so hard to make Duna look like an aggrieved victim and Minho the ultimate bad guy, feeling sorry and asking for forgiveness.
FOH with this bullshit...

"I read it as a character justifying his worthlessness to himself. Basically feeling that he deserves it"
This right here, exactly as you worded it! This is why this whole stupid dream-like flashback did not set right with me!
But I disagree about the author not intending to make Minho the scapegoat, since the author confirmed that she HATES Minho's character for reasons I won't be dwelling on here.

Confirmed as in? How do we know this? Cause I'm, in general, familiar with fans treating info that came from 3-4 hands, "secret" Twitter accounts and stuff like that as legit sources.
I'm not familiar with this particular drama, through. Besides the girl character being author stand-in, which seems true, at least in the og series.
During one of hiatus, I tried to read main series, but to my taste it was very poorly done. Author definitely improved.
If mentioned hate is somehow confirmed... Well, than mangaka failed to do so and by accident wrote story full of subversions.
I'm serious. If you read at least one story where abuser's side gets support from the narrative, you know how it usually done. Minho would have been "saved" from the rapists, abuser would stop showing any signs of short temper or self-centerness. There would be no comparison to how similar were actions of "bad guys" and "changed" abuser. Nevermind by the victim himself.
I kinda like that the story ended where those type of stories usually end. But how we got there (no Stockholm syndrome or attempt at downplaying abuser's actions actually happened) victim just got drained of will to live and than to leave and how hollow their ending-up together feels is quite different from the usual thropes, imho.

The guy gets sexually assaulted and the first reaction of this twat was to get turned on by his wretched appearance!! Seriously wtf is wrong with this disgusting bitch!! She behaves and thinks like a perverted old man with toxic masculinity. Nothing about her gives off the vibe of a woman, only her outside physical appearance, she's gross and a total creep.
I'm still surprised that we did not get a single panel of him going down on her!
Every time oral sex was involved, it was ALWAYS of him forcing her to give a tedious BJ!
(Which centers the MALE gaze), and I end up skipping that shit every single time!!
For a man who's obsessed, at least he should be devouring her like a hungry beast every chance he gets!
He's just not worshipping every inch of her body as an obsessed man should!
This work gives off seinen vibes disguised as josie. Plenty of things about it caters to the male pleasure, when it should be the other way around!
In the novel he does a lot
Well, too bad it wasn't depicted in the manhwa.
Why would the artist leave out something like that and only focus on portraying the nasty BJs in a female focused work is beyond me!
I think because she doesn't have much room for every scene
