This is the thing- author does so poorly on world building we don't even know what this illness really does and what are the consequences or even symptoms, except he sleep due to meds. For all we can guess, he might drop dead if he misses meds by an hour, or he might as well live semi normal life, but his illness may make him have early puberty which is not advised.
This is the issue with whole story. It plays on tropes but it introduces twists and new concepts, but doesn't worldbuild or even really character build. So the motivation of kid possibly dying is only your interpretation and not in story fact.
If the quality of life was really such an important thing for the omega, he would swallow his pride and allow his best friend to just buy good meds. Best friend offered at least twice. But omega is such an independent woman that he'd rather let his kid zombie trough life than accept charity.
So the argument about child wellbeing isn’t really supported in the story and by omega's behaviour. And I place this squarely on the author, who can clearly write the script but can't tell a compelling story at the level they aimed for.
