To the fact that the mother wants Ashley to be with the Prince, which may or may not rouse feelings of jealousy within iris or the other sister. I wouldnt blame any of them however.
I hate how she referred to her being more hostile towards Ashley than lily, of course however, I cannot deny the fact that there wasn't any resentment to begin with, but this mother really showed lily and iris more favouritism towards Ashley, which is really the reason why she 'acted out' in this scene. However I think the author exaggerated a bit, knowing iris, she's not the type to do these kind of actions, it's not the appropriate response to the situation, I feel she would be more confrontational about it with her mother rather than go cry about it and have her mother confront her if this makes any sense. I think I'm just biased bec I love iris
I think Iris being a less confrontational here makes sense, she's strong around others but sees no reason to maintain that with her mother (or lily, probably). But she is still confrontational towards ashley, she doesn't (yet?) Find comfort around her as she does her mother & lily. But yeah, strong people tend to have spaces where they can be weak.
Furthermore, the "favoritism" is her teaching ashley things that she didn't learn from her own mother. It sucks that she isn't harsh towards ashley like mildred probably would have been for a young Iris and Lily when they made mistakes. But ashley is also older and being harsh probably wouldn't solve or help anything. Though- Mildred is probably nicer than neccessary because she is trying not to be an evil stepmother. Anyway though, its the same sort of "favoritism" a kid with a disability would get or a "special ed" kid would in a classroom. The teacher would spend extra with these kids outaide of the class because they need a little extra guidance the rest of the class probably wouldn't need. That's how I see it at least.
