what a well written psychological thriller! i don’t want to call this a romance, nothing about this is romantic, but it tackles manipulation incredibly well. i can’t help but find that Katou had more of a sad ending than a happy one, sure, he’s living well and protected, but he became so isolated from everyone he can only depend on the only one who knows him better than himself. Oda is doing everything in his power to make sure Katou has no one else to rely on except himself (i.e he’s happy to know Katou has no friends as well as learning about the death of Katou’s mom). Oda is clearly obsessed with the idea of having Katou all to himself at the expanse of making him lose all social cues and streetsmart.
not only does it pictured emotional isolation and manipulation well, but the same with rape. it’s not graphic, it’s not played out to be sexy, just a simple implication that Katou probably hasn’t consented from the lifeless look in his eyes and as well as that one panel “his roots are sinking deeper into me” depicting Oda literally trying to morph himself onto Katou’s body.

this is just an attempted hornier retelling of beauty and the beast. it’s the fact that the author proved us that they are, in fact, capable of making an interesting plot (that latest chapter was genuinely interesting, but considering how many times i’ve been let down as i kept on reading, i’m not interested in knowing more about it) but just refuses to by narrowing down everything with sex, sex, sex, sex.
not only that, i do feel that their relationship/dynamic is poorly written. their reconciliation is a huge fucking joke - seriously tho, Cloden slapped the shit out of her and she still tries to mend things? she calls him out on his bullshit behavior and that cunt goes “stop or i’m gonna kiss you ” motherfucker sit down, and after weeks of silent treatment, they just do make-up sex instead of communicating?
on top of that, but i find it hard to enjoy the sex scenes. it’s not sexy, it ain’t hot, it’s just there and it’s useless. i usually won’t come for the art style but i can’t take it anymore, the art is ugly, the ML is the ugliest tho. the manhwa was already too fast paced for me anyways, like literally on the second chapter, she’s already sitting on his lap when they’ve JUST met. i get it, love at first sight, we gang… but then just make a one shot no plot just porn instead of trying to turn this manhwa into an engaging story, because it’s not.
and i always found it uncomfortable how infantilized Ray is, i get that this is how she is given she had no education when she was young (she doesn’t know how to read and write because of her fuckass brother, so she’s really mentally vulnerable at her grown age) and it’s just, not my cup of tea. anyways, fuck this
i’m a girl who finds it really hard to enjoy a bunch of BL manhwas, mainly because it glamorizes rape and coercive behavior (i know, i can’t handle the spice ☹ i’m sorry lmao) and i truly thought this manhwa would be one of them, just a generic rape story where some mafia rich boy pays them some bills or life supplies in exchange of sex, but no! not really! it was like that at first, but i gave it a try and continued to keep on reading, and i was pleasantly surprised to find Taeju being more considerate of Euihyun’s consent as well as the kid’s comfort!
his way of redemption is far more gratifying than whatever sadistic beauty’s Wookyung did. i’m probably gonna be called a hypocrite since the side story follows the same plot as Waterside Night, rich guy sheltering poor dude in exchange of sex, but see the difference is:
• Euihyun tried to kill himself at the beginning of the manhwa because he believed he wasn’t good enough to provide for the kid. he didn’t know about Taeju, and even then, he was the one who saved him.
• Minho, on the other hand, tried to kill himself BECAUSE of Wookyung (he literally told him he made him so miserable he didn’t fight back when a group of men almost raped him).
After realizing his feelings for Euihyun, Taeju tries to make it right - by suggesting a lawyer when the kid was taken away by his father, apologizing to Euihyun after his violent rut, crying for him when he thought he was gonna kill himself again, barely caring that Euihyun often hits him really violently and checks up on him either way. he’s slowly turning into a green flag by doing so many things correctly, and that’s good. that’s great.
if you love sadistic beauty side story, good for you! i’m glad! but personally, i do think this manhwa tackles redemption far better than sadistic beauty
imo SB side story did not redeem the ml in any way, all it did was contextualize his twisted nature, otherwise, the ending would've had a happy or bittersweet note. but it's pure resignation of fate for the mc who is only going back not bc ml had really changed for the better, but bc he had no one else. sure, ml really regrets what he did, and maybe he sincerely loved mc, and was ready to let go, but his twistedness is still the same, and he may revert back to his abusive ways if mc finds the will to leave again.

I meant, i dont think the author intends us to judge his "redemption", bc they never wrote one in the first place. the story is never about chara development. but about two miserable lonely people in one of the most toxic relationships both developing some sort of mutual Stockholm syndrome (in some sense), and i think any attempt to redeem that pos would be too shallow, unrealistic, and create a lot of dissatisfaction. even if they did attempt, and it were to be cathartic, it would simply take away the serious themes of the story.

i really tried to, like, read it again entirely but i can only do so much and i’m just a girl there’s so much rape, like SO much rape, and this isn’t the first time i’ve read a manhwa with rape but the way it’s portrayed is so realistic and unsettling. manhwas like, Jinx or Waterside Night portrays non-consensual sex as super hot and sexy, so I can stomach that for a bit, but in THIS manhwa? IT’S SO AWFUL !! MY POOR BABE, SETH. there was never once in this manhwa where i really enjoyed the sex scenes, it was mostly me being unsettled and desperate for someone to save Seth from his misery.

If you noticed, Horus is the exact opposite of Seth. Although throughout all of his life he was hunt down, live in missery, fear and anxiety but he never wished Seth to feel what he had experienced. THAT what differs them so much.
