Momo's mother is a very complicated character. On one side she was jealous of her own son and tried to cut all ties with him by ignoring him when he was prostituting himself, drinking and letting him experience all kinds of horrible kinks like that guy who peed in Momo's mouth. On the other hand, she herself was raped when she was 16, never got the proper care, treatment or support and was kicked out of her house. She never matured like normal teenagers, had to learn how the world worked and experienced the world way too quickly in a short period of time all while trying to properly raise a son as a single mother. This is probably what let her to become an abusive mother (I don't know if it might be genetics and Momo probably isn't gonna raise a kid anytime soon so I can't tell if its in the family) and why she chose all those horrible, impulsive decisions. I'm not justifying her actions or saying she should be forgiven, but because of her decisions, past and attempt at a better life it just shows she's only human; a broken fucked-up mistreated human with even all her mistakes she still ends up living decently. This just shows how real Harada can be sometimes. This is just real life sometimes; one bad thing can happen and what we choose to do afterwords is up to us and even then we still don't have control. Some people get what they deserved and others never do. Momo's mom regrets everything she did and I bet 1000% if she could change it she would, but she can't. She also understands she also has no right to place herself back into Momo's life like nothing happened so she continues to act cruel towards him. So she's left to regret what she did for the rest of her life and, for self satisfaction and love she has for Momo, she wanted to know if he was able to find a better life. This is the part I love, instead of hitting her or verbally assaulting her (which would've shown he never moved on) he said he was happy. Momo broke this hateful cycle and was able to move on from his past, essentially showing he was different from his mom. I feel like Harada wanted this to be realistic, not idealistic. The idea that Momo's mom is living a stable life in America is so unsatisfying and ideally she should be punished. But because of Momo finding happiness and showing this off to his mom, it gives Yatamomo a bittersweet ending. And to be honest, punishing the mom for what she's done would ruin the atmosphere (environment, aura, etc.) Yatamomo creates when reading this because she's not the only character who's made morally terrible decisions. Though she might be the worst one.
Sorry for the SUPER long rant. I wanted to convey what I wanted thought about the mom and Yatamomo overall clearly. I feel like with story as deep as Yatamomo, I should look at things more closely too.
They're so buff Bara Burger King would hire them.
